Photographic-Quality Clamshell Decoration — W+CMYKOGV with Inline Inspection at Production Speed

Application profile: a North American food-service packaging supplier producing thermoformed clamshells for quick-service-restaurant (QSR) and food-service brand programs. Annual volume in the tens of millions of clamshells across a multi-SKU brand family — burger, chicken, breakfast, seasonal, and limited-edition SKUs, each with its own decorated graphic and brand color specification.
Decorating a clamshell is three problems stacked on top of each other. The substrate fights ink adhesion. PETG, PVC, and clarified polypropylene are low-surface-energy materials — without pretreatment, the ink will not wet the surface and the print fails handling tests within days. The brand graphic is photographic. Modern food-service brands ship logo lockups, illustrated mascots, and photographic product imagery that conventional CMYK process cannot reproduce. Brand-spec orange, red, and green commonly sit outside the standard CMYK gamut — and food-service brands measure brand color compliance at the rack. The defect cost is asymmetric. A misprint that reaches a QSR location is a brand integrity issue, not a packaging cost issue. The decoration line cannot ship anything but acceptable prints.
The conventional approaches do not solve all three at production volume. Direct offset on clamshells requires expensive tooling per SKU, struggles with curved clamshell geometries, and cannot economically handle short-run seasonal SKUs. Screen printing hits brand color but caps the SKU mix at the plate-change rate. Standard four-color digital handles the SKU mix but cannot reach the expanded brand gamut these programs require.
XD-70 single-pass cell with three production functions integrated into one footprint — corona pre-treatment, expanded-gamut print, and inline vision inspection.
EPS deployed an XD-70 single-pass inkjet line engineered around the clamshell decoration profile. Three production functions sit inside the same enclosed cell:
1. In-line corona pre-treatment. A corona discharge station activates the clamshell surface immediately before print. Atmospheric-pressure, cold-surface discharge — no flame, no solvent, no heat that would deform the thermoformed part. Every clamshell is treated; no operator hand-off, no offline prep step. The activated surface accepts the UV-LED ink chemistry the line is engineered around.
2. White underprint plus W+CMYKOGV expanded-gamut print. Transparent clamshells need an opaque white underlayer to anchor the brand graphic — without it, the printed image disappears against the contents of the container. The XD-70 lays down a white pass first, then the eight-channel CMYKOGV color array (orange, green, violet added to the standard CMYK) covers the photographic brand artwork in a single continuous index. The expanded gamut hits brand-pantone colors that four-color CMYK cannot reach. LED-UV cure pins each color before the part indexes again.
3. Inline vision inspection on every part. A camera-based inspection station scans every decorated clamshell against the SKU’s reference image — color density, image registration, missing-color detection, surface defects. Parts that pass move to packaging. Parts that fail are auto-rejected before they reach the case-pack. The line ships only acceptable prints, by design — there is no “after-the-fact” QC step where a human catches misprints downstream of the decoration cell.
SKU changeover collapses to a software job-load. No plate change, no cliché swap, no per-color reset. A brand family with dozens of SKU variants runs continuously across the line — burger graphic in the morning, chicken graphic after lunch, seasonal limited-edition graphic in the afternoon — without an operator changeover stop.

In-line corona pre-treatment
Every clamshell passes through a corona discharge station immediately before the print bridge. Atmospheric-pressure electrical discharge activates the PETG / PVC / polypropylene surface for ink adhesion — no flame, no solvent, no heat. The treatment is in-motion; pre-treat is not the bottleneck.

Single-Pass White Underprint
Transparent clamshells need an opaque white underlayer for the brand graphic to read. The XD-70's white channel lays down the underprint in the same continuous index as the color pass — no offline prime cycle, no operator hand-off between layers.

W+CMYKOGV — 8-Color Expanded Gamut
The print bridge runs eight color channels: white plus CMYK plus orange, green, and violet. The expanded gamut covers brand-pantone colors that conventional four-color CMYK cannot reproduce — the bright oranges of burger brands, the saturated reds of chicken brands, the greens of fresh-food brands. Photographic illustrations reproduce cleanly without color compression.

Inline LED-UV cure
An LED-UV bank cures the printed image immediately after the color pass. Parts leave the print zone with print-dry surfaces — no offline drying rack, no inter-station WIP. The cured film is the source of the ink-substrate adhesion the line is engineered to deliver.

Inline Vision Inspection
A camera-based inspection station scans every decorated clamshell against the SKU's reference image. Color density, image registration, missing-color detection, surface defects — all checked in-motion. Parts within spec continue to packaging. Parts out of spec are automatically rejected before reaching the case-pack.

Software-Defined SKU Changeover
A new clamshell graphic is a job-load operation on the line controller — not a plate, cliché, or per-color reset. The brand family runs across the same line continuously: burger graphic, chicken graphic, breakfast graphic, seasonal graphic, all without an operator changeover stop. The decoration cost per SKU collapses as the SKU count grows.
