What we mean by golf ball decoration

Curved-surface decoration with a personalization problem and a brand-color problem.

Golf ball decoration looks simple, but it is one of the most difficult curved-surface printing challenges. The substrate is spherical, dimpled, and slippery in the fixture; the printable band wraps around the ball’s equator with no flat reference; the brand graphic carries fine line work, vector marks, and increasingly full-color photographic content. The legacy approach — multi-station pad print cells with rotary indexing and one cliché per color — meets the brand standard for stock SKUs, but every color change costs the line a setup, and a one-up personalized ball is economically off the table.

EPS engineers XD-360 single-pass cylindrical inkjet cells purpose-built for the golf-ball geometry. A golf ball is scanned by an optical sensor, reading the dimple pattern in order to locate the equator and register the print position. A 6-axis articulated robot picks balls and seats each one into a numbered nest with precise orientation. The ball spins on its mandrel beneath the single-white-plus-CMYK head array for full 360° coverage in one pass. LED-UV cure pins each color before the carousel indexes again. The same robot transfers the finished ball into the correct sorted unload bin. Optical alignment, robotic load, in-line cure, and sorted unload all sit inside one machine.
