Syringe-barrel decoration — at vaccine-scale throughput.

Bulk-in to decorated-out. 360° graduations in one index. Clean-room-compatible, CE-compliant.

Syringe-barrel decoration is one of the highest-volume direct-to-object printing applications in the world. Every barrel needs sharp, repeatable graduation marks and product identification usually wrapped 360 degrees around a 10–40 mm clear plastic cylinder — at production rates that scale with vaccine and drug-delivery demand. EPS engineers rotary pad-print cells that take bulk-molded syringes from the upstream cell, decorate them at 7,000+ pieces per hour, and hand off cleanly to the downstream filling line — with no operator hands on the parts.

What we mean by syringe decoration

The medical decoration application where operator hands cap the line.

Syringe and vial decoration is the medical-device application where the regulatory profile (FDA-grade production, Class VI ink chemistry, clean-room-compatible cell construction) collides head-on with vaccine-scale throughput targets. The decoration step has to keep pace with the upstream molding line — and the molding line runs in the hundreds of millions of barrels per year. Manual or semi-automatic pad-print stations have historically capped the decoration step at a small fraction of what the molding line delivered, with operator load/unload as the practical bottleneck.

EPS engineers rotary pad-print cells purpose-built for high-volume syringe decoration. The XRV rotary pad-print line consolidates bulk infeed (stainless-steel hopper, phonic-hooded vibratory feeder), aligned conveyance, rotary indexing, an eight-sector rotary pad head against a continuously rotating cliche drum, integrated ink recirculation, inline hot-air cure, and automatic offload into a single CE-compliant, clean-room-compatible cell. From bulk infeed to decorated output, no operator hands touch the part — the line frees skilled operators for higher-value work and removes hands as a contamination vector inside the cell.

Syringe & vial sub-applications

Six syringe and vial decoration families EPS systems handle today.

Different containers, different regulatory profiles, different volume curves. Same XRV cell architecture flexes to all of them.

Pre-Filled Glass Syringes

High-precision scale markings, dosage indicators, brand identification, and serialization on glass pre-filled syringes. Pad printing for the geometry, validated Class VI ink chemistry, 100% inline vision verification.

Disposable Plastic Syringes

Single-use syringes for vaccine administration, parenteral drug delivery, and clinical use. PP / PC / cyclic-olefin polymer barrels decorated at 10,000+ pieces per hour on the XRV rotary line.

Auto-Injectors & Pen Devices

Brand identification, dosing markings, and serialization on auto-injector and pen-injector housings. Multi-pass UV inkjet for variable data and short-run drug delivery device decoration.

Vaccine Syringes

Pandemic-scale single-use syringe programs. Hundreds of millions of barrels per year per program. The XRV cell architecture is what EPS engineers when the molding line and the decoration line have to balance volumes.

Diagnostic Syringes & Tubes

Markings for blood-draw syringes, diagnostic transfer devices, and laboratory tubes. Variable data per unit for sample tracking; validated against the customer's sterilization process before line ship.

Pharmaceutical Vials

Lyophilization vials, injection vials, multi-dose containers. Direct decoration with full 360° wrap on glass and PET vial substrates. Variable data for lot codes, expiration dating, and anti-counterfeit serialization.

Featured customer

A leading disposable-medical-device manufacturer running vaccine-scale syringe production.

EPS deployed the XRV rotary pad-print line for a leading disposable-medical-device manufacturer producing single-use syringes for vaccine administration, parenteral drug delivery, and clinical use. Annual volume measured in the hundreds of millions of barrels; multi-shift operation; strict cycle-time targets. The cell consolidates bulk infeed, vibratory singulation, rotary indexing, eight-sector pad print against a 100 mm cliche drum, integrated ink recirculation, inline hot-air cure, and automatic offload into one CE-compliant, clean-room-compatible footprint. From bulk-in to decorated-out, no operator hands touch the part.

Recommended EPS platforms for syringe decoration

Three platforms cover most syringe & vial decoration.

Pick the cell that matches your container geometry, volume, and SKU profile. EPS engineers the rotary indexing, pretreatment, and cure around the substrate.

XRV Rotary Pad-Print Line

Rotary · 8-sector pad · 10,000/hr · clean-room compatible

The syringe platform. Bulk hopper, phonic-hooded vibratory feeder, rotary indexing, eight-sector rotary pad head against a 100 mm steel cliche drum, integrated ink recirculation, inline hot-air cure, automatic offload. CE-compliant guarding, carbon-active fume aspiration, stainless steel + aluminum frame.

KP08 Pad — Lower-Volume Syringe Lines

5-color pad · medical-grade · 360° wrap

For lower-volume syringe programs where the XRV rotary cell is overkill, the KP08 pad printer handles multi-color syringe decoration with 360° wrap on cylindrical substrates. Medical-grade construction with Class VI ink compatibility.

FJet 24 — Multi-Pass UV for Variable Data

Multi-pass UV inkjet · variable data · short-run

For drug delivery devices, auto-injectors, and short-run plastic syringes where variable data per unit is required, multi-pass UV inkjet delivers per-unit serialization without the rotary cell setup.

Why EPS for syringe decoration

Five engineering decisions that separate syringe cells from generic pad-print stations.

What EPS puts in a syringe decoration cell that semi-automatic pad-print setups can't match.

Bulk-in, decorated-out — no operator hands

Stainless hopper, phonic-hooded vibrator, aligned conveyance, rotary indexing, automatic offload. Hands removed as a bottleneck AND as a contamination vector — critical inside an FDA-regulated production envelope.

Eight-sector rotary pad head

Eight pad sectors per revolution means eight syringes decorated per pad cycle. The geometry that lets the line run continuously at the print head's mechanical limit instead of waiting on station-by-station indexing.

Integrated ink recirculation + auto-mixing

Sealed cup system with automatic ink mixing pump. Long production batches run without operator intervention for ink dilution or density correction. Color stays in spec across multi-shift campaigns.

Class VI ink chemistry validated

Ink chemistry tested against the substrate (PP, PC, cyclic-olefin polymer) AND the sterilization process before line ship. The chemistry team owns this end-to-end — competitors sell printers; EPS sells qualification-ready cells.

CE-compliant, clean-room-compatible

Stainless steel and aluminum frame; phonic-hooded vibratory feeder; full-perimeter safety guarding to CE standards; activated carbon air filtration system. The cell is acceptable inside the customer's regulated production envelope, adjacent to filling.
