About USP Class I certification
USP Class I is the lower of the two pharmacopeial classifications for inks that contact the human body. It covers topical applications — anything the printed surface is meant to touch from the outside.
Typical Class I applications:
- Exam-glove and PPE marking
- Topical drug primary and secondary packaging
- Skin-contact consumer-grade medical devices
- External-use catheter, syringe, and instrument marking
Class VI is the next certification level up — required for any ink that contacts the body internally (implants, indwelling catheters). See the Class VI page.
