The five criteria that matter
The best inkjet machine solution depends on several criteria: image quality (higher resolution requires more expensive heads or multiple passes), throughput (multi-pass versus single-pass options), part and image size (which determine machine size), substrate type (some materials like PP and PE need pre-treatment), and the number of colors required (dark substrates need white base-coat plus CMYK).
When single-pass wins
For high-volume applications requiring minimal part handling, single-pass inkjet printers deliver up to 14 inches per second print speed, minimum 2.75-inch print width, and resolutions up to 720 dpi. These excel in in-line applications, especially when pre-treatment is necessary.
When multi-pass / flatbed wins
For higher resolution needs (up to 1200 dpi) with less speed, flatbed printers work well with smaller identical parts, vacuum pallets, and print heads on movable racks that print and cure simultaneously.
Color systems and operator controls
The technology accommodates monochrome, spot colors, and process colors with white base layers and clear protective coats. Operators can adjust print speeds, ink density, head heights, and color hues. Machines store multiple jobs for quick selection and offer remote access capabilities for job entry and diagnostics.
