Ink Adhesion, Part 3 — Ink Mixing, Contamination, Blooming, and Mold Release

Three critical factors affect ink adhesion beyond ink selection itself: ink mixing, product cleanliness, and substrate additives.

Ink mixing

Inks require precise manufacturer-specified ratios. Deviating from these specifications — including exceeding hardener amounts — risks adhesion failure.

Surface contamination

Handler oils and residues from secondary processes compromise adhesion. We recommend alcohol wiping as a standard decontamination method that evaporates cleanly without leaving residue.

Blooming

Blooming occurs when plasticizers or additives migrate to a part’s surface over time. While initial wiping removes contaminants, blooming is a term used in the plastic industry that denotes a plasticizer or other additive coming to the surface of a part over time, causing recurring adhesion issues.

Mold-release agents

Mold-release agents simplify plastic production but significantly impede ink bonding to substrates.
