Pad Printing Pads — Is Pad Size Important?

Yes. Size the pad 10–20% larger than the image — and learn when to switch to hollow, dual-hardness, or inflatable pads.

Pad size significantly impacts print quality in pad-printing operations. The larger the pad, the less likely the image will distort during the printing process.

Sizing rules of thumb

  • Pad dimensions are measured by length, width, and height (excluding the base)
  • Optimal pad size should be 10–20% larger than the image’s length and width
  • Machine throat depth (distance between cliché and machine body) often limits maximum pad size

When the standard pad gets too big

For large image areas exceeding machine compression capacity, several solutions exist:

  • Hollow-interior pads — maintain surface hardness while reducing silicone material costs
  • Dual-hardness pads — softer core with a harder rubber outer layer, providing greater stability
  • Inflatable pads — use air pressure during ink pickup and deflate upon substrate contact, enabling printing across wider angles (up to 180 degrees versus 100 degrees on standard pads)
