Wood-look plastic trim that has to read as wood at arm’s length — at SKU velocities film, foil, and paint cannot keep up with.

Application profile: a leading architectural building-products manufacturer producing extruded and molded plastic trim for residential and commercial applications — base trim, casing, crown, and exterior accent profiles in long-run wood-look SKUs. Volume measured in tens of thousands of linear feet per shift; broad portfolio of wood-grain looks (oak, walnut, rosewood, weathered plank) where color match and grain authenticity are the basis of the brand. Multi-shift operation with strict tact-time targets and zero tolerance for operator-introduced finish variation.

Wood-look plastic trim has historically been decorated with film wraps, hot-stamp foils, or post-mold paint — every one of which is slow, labor-intensive, and limited in the realism of the wood-grain it can reproduce. Film wraps require adhesive lamination and per-SKU film inventories; hot stamps are limited to repeating patterns that read as fake at close range; paint lines drag a multi-station spray-and-cure footprint across the plant floor and still struggle to match the photographic tonal range, grain detail, and plank-to-plank variation that the architectural-trim buyer expects.

On top of the cosmetic challenge, the SKU portfolio is wide and changing. Every new wood-look the brand introduces — a new oak, a darker walnut, a weathered plank — is a new film order, a new stamp die, or a new paint formulation. A photographic-quality wood-grain library, refreshed by season, is incompatible with a decoration process built around physical consumables. And operator labor on the line — manual loading, manual handling between stations, manual unloading — caps throughput and introduces every kind of finish variation a quality team has to chase.

The EPS solution

EPS deployed an XD-Series single-pass inkjet line purpose-built for direct-to-shape wood-grain decoration of plastic trim. Three sets of single-pass printheads are arranged around the trim path — one set printing the top face, one set printing each side — so a part is fully decorated in a single straight-through pass with no re-fixturing and no second print station. Inline UV-LED cure lamps pin each ink layer before the next head sees the part. The line is automated load to automated unload: an automated parts loader receives racks of un-decorated trim at the head of the cell and an automatic unload conveyor delivers decorated trim straight to staging — no operator handling between rack-in and decorated-out.

The decoration itself is photographic: full single-white plus CMYK channel set, custom color profiles built and locked against physical wood-grain reference panels, so an oak SKU prints as the oak and a walnut SKU prints as the walnut — every plank with its own grain-pattern variation rather than a repeating film. Color matching to specific wood-grain references is a managed RIP workflow: each wood-look SKU is its own profile, locked under change control, and re-validated when ink lots change.

The result is finish-buyer-grade tonal range — full color depth, sharp grain detail, plank-to-plank variation — direct on the plastic substrate, with no film, no foil, and no paint waste in the cell. A new wood-look is a new RIP profile, not a new film order or a new die.
